The MTL838B-MBF is an analog multiplexer receiver used in conjunction with the MTL831B hazardous area millivolt input multiplexer transmitter.Up to 32 analog input states can be transmitted from hazardous areas to safe areas through two data highways,each consisting of a pair of simple twisted pairs,with a distance of up to 500 meters.When the input is located in a hazardous area,each data highway must be protected by an MTL3052 digital isolator.MTL831B is typically used with thermocouples and RTD inputs for intrinsic safety.It can be installed in Zone 0 hazardous areas and can accept 16 inputs.A maximum of two MTL831B transmitters can be combined on a single MTL838B-MBF receiver input,resulting in a total of 32 analog inputs.

MTL838B-MBF acts as a Modbus slave device.It can be connected to any standard Modbus network,with a maximum of 31 MTL838B-MBF slave stations on each network.If each unit has 32 analog inputs,the status of a total of 992 analog inputs can be transmitted to the Modbus master through a single RS485 network.

MTL838B-MBF can be connected to Modbus hosts in various ways-as mentioned earlier,it can be used for multi-point or point-to-point operations.Two RS485 outputs A and B are provided on the MTL838B-MBF.Due to having two outputs,the device can be connected to a Modbus host with dual redundancy or to two independent Modbus hosts.

MTL838B-MBF will respond on any RS485 connection that receives a query,and there are no restrictions on using two interfaces simultaneously.When using the second interface to communicate with the second Modbus host,if necessary,the DIL switch for establishing the second interface address can be set to”Add32 for Port B address”.

MTL838B-MBF has two different operating modes-normal and initialization.During power on,it will always enter initialization mode.It can also be triggered by the detection of internal hardware or software faults,or after receiving instructions to reset some or all configuration registers from the host.During the initialization process,the device will ignore all commands from the host.
